Savoy Vase
Alvar Aalto
1936
One of the forefathers of the Modernist movement, Alvar Aalto was an architect and designer now best known for the design of his Savoy Vase, one of the world’s most iconic glass objects. Finding inspiration to create beautiful forms can come from anywhere and what is perhaps less well known is the Savoy Vase was inspired by an Eskimo woman’s breeches that had frozen whilst hanging out to dry on the washing line. It’s testament to Aalto’s design that it’s still one of the best-selling vases in the world. At bluestone we also know that inspiration can come from the most unlikely of sources. By looking at and interpreting things in different ways, great beauty can be derived from very ordinary things.
